Breaking News For UFC Fight Night Norfolk February 29th 2020

The UFC Flyweight Championship is on the line this Saturday February 29th 2020 but for Deiveson Figueiredo, it’s not.

For non-championship fights, fighters are allowed to weigh in up to 1.5 lbs over the said weight limit in each division.

In Championship matches you must not exceed the limit at all. You may not weigh in 0.5 lbs over.

This Friday, the day of the weigh-ins for UFC Fight Night in Norfolk, Deiveson Figueiredo missed weight by 2.5lbs! It may not seem like much but for a fight at 125lbs it is a huge difference.

What does this mean that he missed weight?

Figueiredo will have to give 30% of his purse to Joseph Benavidez and only Benavidez is eligible to gain the flyweight Championship belt.

If Deivision wins, then the flyweight Championship Belt is vacant.

This is a huge blow for the flyweight division in the UFC because they have had a tough time with excitement from the casual fans for these fights and historically don’t do well on PPV.

Arguably one of the best Mixed Martial Arts fighters of all time (Demetrious Johnson) couldn’t “move the needle” far enough for Dana White and the UFC.

Henry Cejudo brought back some energy to this division last year when he fought TJ Dillashaw and knocked him out in the first round and there was excitement for him to fight Joseph Benavidez but after going up to Bantamweight and gaining that title against Marlon Moraes, he’s decided to stay and not defend his flyweight belt.

After Saturday night, we’ll see what happens but it’s not looking good for the struggling flyweight division and if Joseph Benavidez retires if he wins the belt tomorrow, then the flyweight division will likely be gone for good.
